Producer prices for commercial products (domestic sales), August 2026

WIESBADEN – TheProducer pricesCommercial products in August 2026 were 4.6% higher than in August 2025. According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), producer prices in August 2026 increased by 1.1% compared to July 2026.
The increase in producer prices compared to the previous month is mainly due to rising energy prices (+8.3%). Prices for intermediate goods (+6.1%) also rose significantly compared to the previous month.
Capital goods (+2.4%) and consumer goods (+2.1%) were also more expensive in August 2026 than a year ago. Consumer goods (-2.0%) were, however, cheaper. Without taking energy into account, producer prices in August 2026 rose by 3.1% compared to August 2025, and by 0.2% compared to July 2026.
Price increases in mineral oil products are responsible for the increase in energy prices in the previous year.
Energy was 8.3% more expensive in August 2026 than in the previous month. Compared to July 2026, energy prices rose by 3.2%. Due to the ongoing conflicts in Iran and the Middle East, prices for mineral oil products were 40.5% higher than in August 2025, and rose by 4.9% compared to July 2026. Raw gasoline (naphtha) cost 44.4% more than in August 2025, while light heating oil was 65.3% and fuel 37.7% more expensive.
Natural gas in distribution cost 7.5% more than all consumer groups. Prices for electricity rose by 1.7% compared to August 2025. District heating was 0.5% cheaper than in the previous month.
High price increase for goods under advance payment
The prices for goods under advance payment were 6.1% higher in August 2026 than in the previous month (+0.2% compared to July 2026).
The price increase compared to August 2025 was mainly due to the higher prices of metals (+14.8%). In particular, the prices of precious metals (+34.6%) rose significantly compared to the previous month. Copper and semi-finished products also had to be paid 34.6% more than in the previous year. Raw iron, steel and ferroalloys were also more expensive in August 2026 than in the previous month (+6.9%), including concrete steel 6.3% more.
The prices for basic chemical materials rose by 11.2% compared to the previous month. Fertilizers were 8.4% more expensive than a year ago.
Wood and wood and cork products (+7.1%) were also more expensive than in the previous month, including sawn wood with +8.2% and veneer wood with +2.2%. Significant price increases were seen in pellets, briquettes and planks with +36.6% compared to the previous month.
The prices for glass and glassware remained unchanged compared to the previous month. Among them, processed and refined flat glass was 1.5% more expensive, while the prices for hollow glass fell by 0.1% compared to August 2025.
Paper, cardboard and products made thereof cost 0.7% more than in the previous month. Feed for livestock (+4.4%) and wheat flour (+0.3%) also increased compared to August 2025.
Price increases also for capital goods and consumer goods, price decreases for consumer goods.
The prices for capital goods were 2.4% higher in August 2026 than in the previous month (+0.2% compared to July 2026). Machines cost 2.0% more than in August 2025, while the prices for cars and car parts also rose by 2.0%.
Consumer goods were 2.1% more expensive in August 2026 than in the previous month (+0.1% compared to July 2026).
Consumer goods produced and sold in Germany cost 2.0% less than in the previous month and 0.2% more than in July 2026. Among consumer goods, food prices fell overall by 4.3%. Butter (-40.5%), pork (-16.3%) and beef (-9.3%) were significantly cheaper than in August 2025. Vegetable oils (+17.5%) and sugar (+3.6%) were more expensive than in the previous month.
Methodical notes:
The Producer Price Index for commercial products measures the development of prices for products produced and sold in Germany in mining, manufacturing and energy and water industries. All taxes and duties on the products except value-added tax are considered. This index represents price changes in an early phase of the economic process. The survey date is always the 15th of the reporting month. The current base year for the Producer Price Index for commercial products is 2021. The basket and weighting of the index refer to this base year.
