Snow-capped mountains, freezing temperatures and endless marshland. Many of the Red Army soldiers had only thin clothes and straw sandals to wear; others had to go barefoot. When their food ran out, they resorted to eating their leather belts and gnawing on bones.

Yet, against all the odds, they kept going.

Journalist Vivienne Nunis retraces the historic Long March route through some of China's most unforgiving landscapes, while Mike Walter encounters modern communities finding radical new ways to survive and thrive in the Gobi Desert. Though nearly a century separates these stories from the Long March, the question remains the same: What does it take to keep going when nature itself seems determined to stop you? Tune in to CGTN's Long March documentary Breaking Through to find out.
