The National Counter-Terrorism Unit of the Judicial Police has concluded and referred, to the DCIAP, for the purposes of indictment, a criminal investigation against the defendant who, on last March 21st, launched an improvised incendiary device against protesters of the March for Life, in front of the Assembly of the Republic.
The numerous diligences carried out have allowed to establish the chronology of the defendant's radicalization, between 2021 and the date of his detention by the Judicial Police, on April 14, 2026.
During the investigation, important probatory elements were collected that point towards premeditation, planning, and ideological motivation that will form the basis of the attack.
The defendant has been in preventive detention for six months, a coercive measure confirmed by an Acordão (decision) of the Lisbon Court of Appeal.
The outcome of this criminal investigation is another demonstration of the complex and specialized work being done by the Judicial Police, in close collaboration with the Public Ministry, in the fight against all forms of violent extremism and terrorism.
