Dollar experiences historic surge.
The commercial dollar closed the session up 8.21%, quoted at R$ 5.403. This was the largest daily percentage appreciation of the US currency since January 13, 1999, a period marked by changes in the Brazilian exchange rate regime.
In the morning, the currency reached R$ 5.605, exceeding the R$ 5.60 mark. However, throughout the day, it lost strength and fell to the R$ 5.40 range, in a movement of profit-taking (selling money to cash in gains) and the entry of funds from exporters who took advantage of the rise to internalize currencies.
The election results altered the positions that investors had established before the vote. Part of the market expected the victory of Flávio Bolsonaro, who had led the first round, and had to adjust their strategies after the confirmation of Lula's re-election.
The National Treasury also acted in the market through the repurchase of government bonds. Despite the daily surge, the US currency still accumulated a decline of 1.57% in 2026.
Stock market registers strong decline
The Ibovespa closed down 13.88%, at 176,608.23 points, at the lowest closing level since August 31st.This represented the largest daily drop since March 2020, a period marked by the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
During the morning, the index fell by more than 17%, reaching 169,516.43 points. The intensity of the fall led to the activation of thecircuit breakermechanism, used by the stock exchange to temporarily suspend trading during periods of sharp devaluation.
The financial volume traded on the exchange was R$ 88.6 billion, much higher than the average daily of approximately R$ 25 billion.
With the result of the session, the Ibovespa eliminated the accumulated gains in October and began to record a 5.22% drop in the month. In the accumulated for 2026, the index maintained an appreciation of 9.61%.
